The current SG model, carrying on Yamaha’s legacy!
For over 50 years, the Yamaha SG has been beloved by guitarists worldwide as a leading solid-body guitar.
Since the release of the SG175 in 1974, the Yamaha SG has undergone various model changes and continues to captivate players as a guitar that combines superb sound, outstanding playability, and beautiful design.
Since the 2000s, the music scene in particular has continued to evolve in many ways, and numerous new styles of music have emerged.
The current SG series was developed to meet modern needs and serve as the benchmark for solid-body guitars.
Features include a set-neck construction handcrafted using advanced Japanese woodworking techniques, a body and neck made of African mahogany, and an arched maple top.
Characterized by these features, the new SG satisfies the needs of modern musicians and boasts entirely new, uncompromising specifications.
The SG1820 is the flagship model of the SG series, equipped with Seymour Duncan '59 pickups that deliver a well-balanced humbucker sound, making it an all-around instrument suitable for a wide range of rock sounds.
Of course, the SG’s renowned playability, body balance, and neck feel remain intact.
〇Body & Neck
While retaining the maple top/mahogany back construction and the double cutaway—the iconic SG design—the SG1820’s body has been refined to deliver the sound, playability, and looks that today’s guitarists demand.
The arch shape of the body top has been refined to feature a steeper curve than before. The body top, where the bridge and tailpiece are positioned, is made of thick maple to capture string vibrations. By gradually thinning the maple toward the outer edges of the body, the design ensures efficient transmission of string vibrations throughout the entire body and achieves optimal weight balance.
〇 Neck & Fingerboard
Since many SG models custom-built at the Custom Shop at the request of professional guitarists use rosewood fingerboards instead of the traditional ebony, the current SG features a fingerboard made from carefully selected rosewood. Its warm, well-balanced sound is well-suited to the modern music scene. Additionally, the headstock has been made smaller than before to maintain weight balance with the body.
〇I.R.A. (Initial Response Acceleration)
This is a technique that relieves stress between the finish and the wood by applying vibrations specific to the guitar to the finished instrument. This treatment brings the guitar to a condition similar to that of a well-played instrument.
〇Hardware
We use carefully selected hardware—such as Grover locking tuners, TonePros bridges and tailpieces, and Graph Tech nuts—that prioritizes both sound quality and playability.
